Sample lesson 3 · Overview

If It Is True

Sample lesson 3. Every activity works the way it does in class, but nothing counts: no real claim code is made and no form opens. Start with the first one: each activity has a Next button at the bottom, and Overview brings you back here.

Skills coming into this lesson

  • Read a Java program: the class, main, and the lines that run in order
  • Trace typed variables (int, double, boolean, String) and what println shows
  • Work out a Java boolean expression with <, >, <=, >=, == and !=
  • Join answers with && and ||, and flip one with !

Skills after this lesson

  • Read an if statement: the if line always runs, and its block runs only when the condition is true
  • Say which lines run and what prints, for any value of the boxes
  • Trace a box that changes inside an if block
  • Spot two mistakes that still compile: a semicolon after the condition, and braces left out so only the first line belongs to the if
  1. 1Do Now
The first 10 minutes. Answer every question; a wrong answer shows why. Finishing gives a claim code.
  2. 2I Do: ACT-style reading
The passage with numbered paragraphs and nine ACT-style questions beside it, every answer checked.
  3. 3We Do + Try Its
Read each page with the class and work every Try It.
  4. 4Bench B24
About 30 minutes. Finishing, or "Get my claim code now", gives a claim code.
  5. 5Exit ticket
The last 10 minutes. Each question is answered once. Finishing gives a claim code.
